New Ferry Butterfly Park tour and AGM – Wirral, 14th May 2024

26th March 2024

Join us for a guided tour of the New Ferry Butterfly Park followed by a brief AGM at the Bridge Inn in Port Sunlight (about a mile away). At the AGM, there will be tea and cake, plus a short talk on the CPRE vision by national CPRE Chief Executive Roger Mortlock.

We will meet at the Butterfly Park for 2pm, and expect the AGM and talk to finish at about 4pm.

Set next to Bebington railway station, Wirral, New Ferry Butterfly Park is an oasis of green tranquillity in a densely populated urban area and a fantastic example of how former industrial land can become thriving wildlife habitats.

Up to 26 species of butterfly have been recorded here, with 18 breeding on site. There are now carpets of wild flowers, including wild carrot & occasional bee orchids, on the thin, nutrient-poor soils which overlie old railway track beds. Lime waste from a water softening plant has been used to create a calcareous grassland, supporting specialist wildflowers which depend in this habitat, while drifts of coal dust have transformed into acidic grassland dominated by common bent, sheep’s sorrel & bird’s-foot trefoil.

The event is FREE to attend, but for catering purposes please contact info@cprecheshire.org.uk to confirm how many places you would like.
