Greater Manchester Ringway walking trail

When you’re planning a country walk, Manchester’s city fringes may not seem the obvious place to look. But with 20 stages to explore, the recently completed Greater Manchester Ringway trail offers a huge variety of walking routes for strollers and seasoned hikers alike.

Walks for all

Whether you want to pick and choose short stretches, or set yourself a goal to complete the full 300km circuit, you’ll discover an astonishing variety of landscapes. Covering all 10 boroughs of the city region, the Trail dips in and out of the countryside, through urban green spaces and along waterways.

Each of the 20 stages offers a unique walking experience – from city parks to iconic Peak District landscapes, and canals to nature reserves. The complete route also passes more than 40 listed buildings plus 14 scheduled ancient monuments.

Many stretches of the route are step-free and suitable for almost all users.

CPRE success story

The Ringway Trail is a fantastic success story for CPRE – our friends at CPRE Lancashire, Liverpool City Region and Greater Manchester are key partners in the trail, working alongside Ramblers (Greater Manchester and High Peak) and project lead Dr Andrew Read. The project is supported by a £250,000 Heritage Fund grant (thank you, National Lottery players!).

Choose public transport

Importantly, each stage is accessible via public transport. Sustainability has been a key concern in the creation of the route, so if you can leave your car at home, please do!
