CPRE Cheshire & Cheshire Life Magazine writing competition - last call for entries!

CPRE's  Great Landscapes Week is designed to make us think about how much we appreciate our countryside and encourage us to protect it from insensitive development.

To celebrate the event, Cheshire Life is once again teaming up with CPRE's Cheshire Branch to ask you to write about your favourite Cheshire landscape, and how you would feel if it was ever under threat. Winners will have their work published in Cheshire Life in Spring 2008.

CPRE has been working to protect our Cheshire countryside for eight decades, and  our landscapes are under greater threat now than they have ever been. We are especially concerned by recent calls for widespread changes to the Green Belt, and the potential for massive damage to our environment from the widening of the M6. CPRE is also alarmed at moves to give communities and their elected local representatives less say in the siting of major developments such as power stations or waste plants, and other changes to the planning system in the recent White Paper which could result in more giant retail stores threatening small independent stores and the vibrancy of our towns.

Take a look at our page on tranquillity in Cheshire.  The shocking fact is that Cheshire is one of the least tranquil counties in England, with only Hertfordshire and Surrey having less peace and quiet than us. Proposals for relaxing the Green Belt controls that have helped protect our countryside and regenerate our towns will have a terrible impact on the tranquil places we can still enjoy in Cheshire. CPRE is fighting hard to protect these areas, but we need to make sure the people of Cheshire don’t take the county’s delights for granted – or we may not have them for much longer. 

Our Great Landscapes Week is an ideal time to draw attention to the declining peace and quiet of our countryside, and encourage people to stand up to the threats before it’s too late.
 
If you are now feeling sufficiently inspired, tell us, in no more than 250 words, about your special place in Cheshire, and what effect it would have on you if it was set to disappear under concrete and tarmac. The competition is open to non-professional writers of all ages, and entries from children and schools  are very welcome. Articles must reach CPRE Cheshire by 31st October 2007.
