One of Cheshire CPRE’s major aims is to help and encourage people to exercise their democratic right to have a say in shaping their own environment.
We are extremely concerned at proposals in the recent Planning White Paper that would effectively silence us all as ‘Major Infrastructure Projects’ such as roads, power stations and incinerators were nodded through the planning process.
With our campaigns to promote local foods, reduce congestion and carbon emissions from food miles, and to support local services such as village and high street shops, we are equally worried by the proposal to remove the existing ‘needs test’ in planning, which could lead to even more giant supermarkets driving local traders out of business.
The White Paper also proposes a presumption in favour of development to boost economic growth at the expense of the environment. Large-scale development in pursuit of short-term economic gain will do nothing to meet the UK’s obligations on climate change, nor to protect our natural resources and heritage for future generations
The Government's consultation has now ended, but we will update you with the results as soon as we have them.
