Do we really need 3 million new homes?

Monopoly Board housesAccording to a recent poll conducted for us by ICM, the majority of people oppose the government’s plan to build 3 million new homes by 2020, based on predictions of what housing need may be by then.

Most of the respondents believe the real gainers will be landowners and property developers. Almost half feel the huge numbers will have a detrimental effect on communities, and want more building on derelict sites, and 77% want more to be done by government to make use of the 700,000 homes that are standing empty. The North West has the highest number of empty homes.

CPRE takes this as a clear message that most people want the government to meet housing needs by regenerating urban areas, re-using empty homes and setting more ambitious brownfield targets.
