Hard Shoulder Running on the M6

Countryside campaigners in the Cheshire have welcomed the announcement that the Government will pursue Active Traffic Management on the M6 in the county, rather than widening. But this can only be seen as a short term measure. This week Geoff Hoon, Transport Minister, announced that proposals for Active Traffic Management (ATM) would be pursued on the motorway rather than widening .

CPRE accept that Active Traffic Management ( similar to the approach operating on the M42) can help with short term problems and, if handled properly, reduce Carbon Dioxide emissions, but without providing alternatives to get traffic off the roads it will not be a long term solution. What we need now are policies that reduce our long term dependance on cars, including a reliable and effective public transport network.
