Your views are being sought on Local Government Reorganisation

In response to the Government White Paper, ‘Strong and Prosperous Communities’, major changes to the structure of local government in the shire county of Cheshire have been proposed.

The existing two-tier structure in the shire, with the County Council, and 6 District Councils will be swept away and replaced with either a single Unitary Council for the whole of Cheshire, or two Unitary Councils: Chester /West Cheshire, made up of Chester City, Ellesmere Port and Neston, and Vale Royal, and Cheshire East, comprising Macclesfield, Congleton and Crewe and Nantwich.

The Government is consulting on these two options, so look at the proposals here www.cheshire.gov.uk/onecouncil/ and here www.chester.gov.uk/peopleandplaces and have your say on this important issue.

Send your comments to Government by email to structures@communities.gsi.gov.uk  before 22nd June 2007.

The Government is expected to announce the results of the consultation at the end of July, and elections to the new Council or Councils would take place in May 2008, with the changes fully operational by April 2009.
