Say 'no' to dirty old coal!

Since 2003, the Government has spent 20 times more on extending coal mining than on marine renewables. Follow the link below to send an e-postcard (text below) to Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change and John Denham, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government asking them to stop funding new opencast coal mining, and to spend the money they have budgeted for renewable marine energy in order to protect the countryside.

Dear Ed Miliband & John Denham,

I support CPRE's call to stop opencast coal mining and boost funding for wave and tidal power.

Earlier this year you promised a renewables revolution, but funding and granting planning permission for damaging opencast schemes from within Government - such as the recent Huntington Lane, Telford decision - threatens to undermine this. I urge you to work with your cabinet colleagues to:

  • announce a moratorium on funding and approving new coal mining until carbon capture and storage technology is proven;
  • reaffirm the Government's presumption against opencast coal mining and demonstrate this by refusing permission for new opencast coal mines; and
  • spend more on research and development of wave and tidal power, which are an essential technology for our low-carbon future.
