Farming
We want farming that works with nature
With farmland making up two-thirds of our countryside, farming is responsible for so much more than the food we eat. We need to support farming that puts back habitats for wildlife, provides fresh air and clean water, stores carbon and looks after the landscapes that make our countryside so special.
At Whitehouse Farm, in the header picture, wild bird seed mixtures have been planted in corners of the fields to provide a vital supply of nutritious seeds for birds throughout the winter. Along some of the hedgerows the grass has not been cut allowing taller vegetation to grow. This provides cover for insects and small mammals, which in turn provide food for scavengers and predators higher in the food chain. An orchard provides nectar for pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
