Cheshire community groups working for sustainability

The benefits of looking after the countryside on our doorstep are ever more relevant, and there are plenty of opportunities for you to get involved. At CPRE Cheshire we want to highlight the marvellous work of community groups doing good throughout our county.

Many towns in Cheshire now run their own eco-groups, below is a list of just some of the groups working towards sustainability. Let us know of any we’ve missed!

Macc Wild Network

A Macclesfield group working to create both a network of nature filled green spaces and a network of like-minded people and organisations with the skills, knowledge and expertise all working to make this vision a reality.

Macclesfield Community Tree Nursery

The Tree Nursery grows trees from seeds collected locally and gives them to anyone (individual or organisation) who can give them a good home. Get your hands dirty at a growing site, look after saplings at home, or help with sorting out seeds.

Multiple community initiatives including green space projects/community gardens, sharing horticulture knowledge and sustainable food growing.

Sustainable Nantwich

A group that works alongside ‘Surfers Against Sewage’ campaign to create a plastic free Nantwich. It holds regular litter picking events and membership is free.

Transition Wilmslow

A registered charity working on improving community, nature and biodiversity. The group regularly update their Facebook page with eco-friendly initiatives and projects. Recent events held include a tree planting ceremony commemorating the end of the second World War, as well as a talk on protecting nature locally.

Friends Of The Earth Chester

A community organisation based in Chester promoting conservation. Recent events held include a litter pick, planting to attract pollinators and holding a local ‘repair café’ where residents can get items fixed as opposed to buying new. The group also hold monthly meetings both in-person and via zoom talking about their upcoming projects or green initiatives locally. Recent talks included the City Nature Challenge and tree felling in Chester.

Climate Action Frodsham

A community group with the aim to improve sustainability and reduce the carbon footprint in Frodsham. The group are also part of the ‘transition’ network in Cheshire and hold nature inspired talks and community events such as seed and plant swaps.

Sustainable Northwich

A group promoting eco-friendly initiatives locally, alongside looking after a community garden. Events shared on the group involve open garden events with volunteering opportunities and plastic free workshops.

Sustainable Cheshire

A community enterprise helping Cheshire to live more sustainably. The group is managed on a voluntary basis and includes projects such as Plastic free Cheshire, Cheshire Cup Club (an initiative that promotes using reusable cups in Chester), Food For The Planet project and litter pick hubs. The group also work with City to Sea to support the Refill campaign locally.

Cheshire Wildlife Trust

The Cheshire Wildlife Trust group manages multiple sites for nature recovery and works to influence action for creating natural carbon solutions to combat the current climate and nature crisis. Hands-on volunteering opportunities.
