Opposing a New Town and other major development on Adlington Green Belt

Looking towards the site for the proposed Adlington New Town

At the end of September 2025, the government launched proposals for 12 potential New Towns. It came as a bolt out of the blue to discover that the rural area of Adlington – between Macclesfield and Stockport, and with virtually no infrastructure – was one of the proposed locations.

Current situation

Though Adlington was not selected for the main New Towns programme, the government says it remains a viable proposition for development and that there is government funding available to help bring forward large development sites.

Whilst we and local people were relieved by the decision, we were still concerned that Belport would instead seek to develop the area through piecemeal planning applications. With no public master plan underpinning this approach, the outcome of this approach could be potentially even worse than a New Town would have been.

Belport have now set out proposals for a residential-led development of up to 1,275 dwellings under the name of Adlington Park.

Help us fight for the countryside

With the countryside under threat as never before, we need to step up our efforts to protect it. Fighting proposals such as this requires expert professional input – which costs money.
