Mid-Cheshire in 1976: CPRE Cheshire’s film

North West Film Archive unearths 1976 campaign film made by CPRE Cheshire

CPRE’s film highlights the beauty of spots mainly in the former Vale Royal district of Cheshire, including Arley Hall, Great Budworth, Marbury Country Park, the Whitegate Way, Anderton Marina, Oakmere lake, Gawsworth Hall and Shakerley Mere.

The narrator also highlights problems with derelict buildings – ‘eyeless monstrosities’ – rural developments that ‘burn us with eyesores of untidy vehicles and equipment littering the pastoral scene’, and ‘the largest interloper of them all – the motorway’.

I’m glad that many of the places shown in the film are still relatively picturesque, as evidenced by Great Budworth being chosen as filming location for the recent ‘War of the Worlds’ TV series.

The video is 26 minutes long and well worth watching!
