National Land Use Framework Consultation

4th March 2025

Cows, solar panels, houses, gigafactories, trees, nature recovery… the list of demands on land grows daily. So how do we make the best decisions about what goes where?

It might not seem immediately exciting – but the launch of the national government consultation on proposals for a Land Use Framework is an opportunity that could lead to radically better outcomes for the countryside.

A joined-up approach to land use

Our countryside is under pressure as never before – we need land for homes, farming, nature, climate resilience, renewable energy infrastructure, transport, industry and more.

Currently, there’s no joined-up approach to making decisions about what goes where. This means there’s a big risk that the rush to build housing and infrastructure will trump other land uses.

We are confident, however, that it is possible to both deliver housing and infrastructure needs and keep the land we need for food, nature and climate.

But to do that demands a new approach – one that joins up land use planning across all government departments and helps people make better decisions.
