The Cloud, Congleton

Wonderful views over the Cheshire Plain and beyond.

This relatively short walk is really rewarding in terms of the wonderful views – and ascending from the Timbersbrook Car Park gives the opportunity for quite a workout in climbing the 136 steps up the steep side of the hill. It’s a good one for a summer evening after work with a picnic or a short winter’s afternoon. And there are plenty of flat rocks to sit on at the top!

Park in the Timbersbrook car park and follow the footpath to Tunstall Lane.

Here you have a choice of tackling the steps or carrying on and then turning right along a more gentle slope which forms part of the Gritstone Trail.

Both paths meet up to continue up the Cloud.

You will come out of the woodland to an open section covered in bilberry bushes and bracken with good views to the south.

Parts of this area are now dedicated to mountain bikes so beware if you step off the main path!

Carrying on up the hill, you will come to a stile where there are three paths. Both the one to the left and the one straight up will lead to the top.

Walking to the left is longer and carries round the edge of the Cloud, with good views all the way.

The path which heads straight up climbs through woodland then heather-covered moorland before heading straight for the trig point and toposcope.

Visit Viewfinder Panoramas for a really good visual of all the hills and places you can see from the top!

The great thing about this walk is that there are lots of paths to explore on the top, and you can either return to the bottom the way you came or by the other path.
