CPRE Cheshire wins 2025 Hedgerow Heroes funding

19th August 2025

We’re excited to announce that we have been successful in our application for further hedgerow planting funds from national CPRE’s Hedgerow Heroes programme.

The application was made in partnership with Trust for Conservation Volunteers (TCV), who will be our delivery partners. We worked with TCV on our previous Hedgerow Heroes project in 2023.

The grant of just under £50,000 – provided by external funders – will see around 2km of hedgerow planted in multiple locations. Provisional sites include Wigg Island (Runcorn), Widnes Warth, Port Sunlight River Park, Countess of Chester Country Park, Trafford countryside sites, Hassall Green (Sandbach), and Whitby Park in Ellesmere Port. The opportunity to boost hedgerows in the Mersey Valley area is particularly welcome, as this has been identified by CPRE nationally as a priority area for hedgerow action.

An important element in delivering the project will be TCV’s plans to recruit volunteer hedge planters from groups of people who might be unfamiliar with venturing into the countryside. This will both introduce new people to the benefits of being in green space and (hopefully)give the countryside new supporters!

At CPRE, we’ve been campaigning for hedgerows for many years. Hedgerows are the unsung heroes of our countryside, providing invaluable habitats and connecting corridors for wildlife, soaking up carbon, and enhancing our landscapes.

We’ll be developing plans over the next few months, but if you would like to be informed of potential volunteering opportunities, let us know – email Debbie on
